Western Australian Spotted Gum (Corymbia maculata) is native to south-eastern Australia (eastern New South Wales and eastern Victoria) but has naturalised in south-western Western Australia where this stock has come from. This timber features rich creamy golden brown timber, with a subtle fiddleback feature on the staves either side of the badge. At approximately 940kg/m3 density this is considered quite a hard timber.
This snare drum is very versatile, given its smaller diameter, and has exceptional tone. Purchase this drum for mid to high range tunings especially. Tuned at its lowest, this snare can produce a phat beefy note with solid oomph and a broad open note. As the drum is tuned up, its amazing throaty tone comes more apparent with a beautiful musical ping. It has a fair amount of presence and projection but responds superbly at low volumes.
Drum #573 built 29th September 2022. It has remained in Mat’s collection until now, before which time public exhibition of any Red Rock stock has not occurred.
Note: This particular drum was a WTS-model Red Rock tom, hence the x4 plugged holes (pictured). After production, we decided to have another go at colour/grain matching a tom for the kit, and decided to turn this otherwise great shell into a snare.
